π€ Interesting thought?... If you help people buy, but you don't BUILD MORE HOUSES - the end result will be ROCKET HIGH PRICES for everyone π
π₯ Robert Jenrick Vs Emily Thornberry π₯
Heated debate from Friday night's 'Any Questions' on BBC Radio 4 π» 15m 59s https://lnkd.in/dpfnVux π₯
π¬ Robert Jenrick - Secretary of State for Housing:
β‘ I want to build more homes and help young people on to the housing ladder π
β‘ We have made progress, last year we built 240,000 new homes - more than any year in my entire lifetime π
β‘ We still need to do more if we are going to help young people and those on low incomes to benefit from home ownership π₯
β‘ The term 'Developer's Charter' is just a silly term of phrase - we want to build good quality sustainable homes and we want to BOOST local engagement π¨π©π¦π¦
β‘ Only 1% of the public has any engagement with the current planning system - it's too slow, too complicated, too stacked in favour of the big house builders - we want to change that π
β‘ What we are going to do is let local communities create a local plan, your democratically elected local council will choose where new housing will be built π§±
β‘ If there are sites where you really want to get investment going, then let's have a QUICKER route through planning for them β
β‘ You as members of the public will be electing your councillors, you will be engaging with the process and you will still be able to comment or object to local planning applications π«
β‘ So we need to work together to create a better system, more local engagement, greater trust and to deliver better homes π‘
π¬ Emily Thornberry - Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade:
β We have a HOUSING CRISIS because we are not building enough homes β‘
β Older people are okay, but young are suffering - there is a huge inter-generational injustice going on as a result β
β The schemes introduced by the Government are simply a 'Developer's Charter' - they are designed to further shift the power balance away from communities and towards developers π
β 10% of Tory donations come from Developers, these schemes are a form of payback πΈ
β There will be no local involvement at all, if the government decree that a certain area is going to be developed, that will be it π
β This is anti-democratic and NOT a solution to the housing problem π
βοΈ
β There is not sufficient investment going on, this Government have had 12 years and have NOT done enough π€·βοΈ
β The crisis is getting worse and worse β‘
